Description
Features an integral push-start button built into the solenoid, as originally fitted to early Minis.
While the starter motor is activated by the ignition key (or push button on early cars), the solenoid performs the most critical function. The starter motor draws a very high current when cranking the engine, and the solenoid acts as a heavy-duty switch, allowing this high current to flow. The key or push button carries only a low current, supplying a signal voltage to the solenoid, which then delivers full power to the starter motor.
Mounted in the engine compartment, the solenoid will often appear to either work or fail completely. However, it is common for the high-current contacts inside the solenoid to degrade over time, causing internal resistance that reduces the current available to the starter. When this happens, the starter may turn too slowly or struggle to crank the engine.
On Cooper S models, the solenoid is positioned at the 12 o’clock location, while Mini Plus and standard Cooper models use the 12:10 position.
