Description
Later-type gear change fork retained by a roll pin.
The shift forks in all gearboxes are designed to withstand heavy abuse, as they must support a gear spinning at high RPM while forcing it into the next selected position. Because the gears themselves are made from very hard steel, the shift fork must be softer to avoid damaging the gear, yet still strong enough to cope with the load. For this reason, the forks are manufactured from a brass-based alloy.
While this material protects the gears, it also means the fork can wear or be damaged relatively quickly. If you are rebuilding a gearbox, always check the forks carefully for signs of excessive wear. Resting pressure on the gear lever while driving in any gear will significantly accelerate fork wear, so your hand should be removed from the lever between gear changes.
This later version is now secured using
Selector Fork Roll Pin
