A modern standard-performance rubber cone developed using over 20 years of elastomer technology from our competition-cone manufacturer. Introduced on 02/09/2020 and proudly made in the UK, with over 10,000 units sold by 2023.
The original Mini cone-spring design is now over 60 years old and long overdue for scientific updating. Do NOT use the GSV1264 knuckle with spacer on the front, even on 19902000 models that were originally equipped with them.
The last official revision of the Rover/Dunlop cone spring dates back to 1976, despite major changes in tyre technology and vehicle weights over the years. Earlier designs had to accommodate the transition from cross-ply tyres to radials (fitted to all Minis from 1973), as well as the unique 12" Denovo run-flat tyres on the 1275GT from 1974. These developments significantly altered ride compliance and comfort. In addition, kerb weights increased steadilyfrom approximately 584 kg on the early 850 models, to roughly +76 kg on the 1964 Cooper S, and another +25 kg or more by the 1990s with 1275 engines, larger seats, and additional interior trim. For reference, our SPI (1993/94) weighed 698 kg, and our MPI measured 732 kg, yet both still used the same FAM3968 cone.
These new performance cones provide improved suspension stability, reduced body roll, and consistent ride height after the initial settling period. This stability allows the use of original alloy trumpets, preserving factory authenticity and maintaining vehicle value unlike adjustable HiLo units, which were never part of the original suspension concept. (BMC did experiment with varying trumpet lengths during development.)
A common complaint with other aftermarket cones is premature sagging, leading to inconsistent suspension heights and degraded handling. By 30/09/2020, many customers who experienced height loss with alternative new cones had already replaced them with these, reporting excellent ride stability and consistency.
For best results, cones should be fitted as a full set of four, or at minimum in axle pairs. While adjustable suspension can be used to correct ride height, doing so means each cone operates with different hysteresis and working characteristics.
Please note that cars will initially sit higher than standard when used with fixed-length trumpets until full settling occurs. This may make installation slightly more difficult. If a standard or lower-than-standard ride height is desired immediately, HiLo adjustable trumpets are recommended.
