Description
The oil pressure relief valve consists of an aluminum plunger and heavy-duty spring, located behind the 15/16" domed cap nut beside the distributor. Removing the cap nut provides access to the spring, with the plunger positioned directly beneath it.
Over time, the plunger can become stuck in its bore. In many cases, briefly cranking the engine will generate enough oil pressure to free it. If the plunger remains seized, a suitable thread tap can be carefully screwed into the center of the plunger to provide a grip for extraction.
When installing a new plunger (12H865), it is recommended to lightly lap it into its seat using the same technique employed when lapping cylinder head valves. Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces afterwards to remove any abrasive residue.
For best results, replace the copper sealing washer (6K431) beneath the domed cap nut whenever the relief valve is serviced. This helps ensure a proper seal and prevents oil leaks.
